PHOENIX RECYCLER WILL DONATE MONEY TO LOCAL CHAPTER OF
AMERICAN RED CROSS FOR OUTDATED DEX PHONE BOOKS
PHOENIX, December 1, 2005 – Looking for a simple way to protect the environment and help the Phoenix chapter of the American Red Cross?
Recycle your outdated Dex phone books at a recycling event this Saturday at the Desert Ridge Marketplace. If you stick around you’ll also be able to watch a children’s karaoke contest.
Dex, Radio Disney, Friedman Recycling and GreenFiber are hosting the event at the District Stage in the center of Desert Ridge Marketplace from 4 to 6 pm on Saturday featuring a karaoke contest for kids 14 and under plus games and giveaways. For every outdated Dex directory brought to the event, local recycler GreenFiber will donate $1 – up to a maximum of $1,000 – to the Phoenix chapter of the American Red Cross.
Last year, Phoenix Valley residents recycled more than 2,384 tons of Dex phone books, which saved 40,536 trees, enough landfill space to handle a year’s worth of trash from 1,070 households, and enough electricity to power 975 homes for a year. Since 1991, area residents have recycled 34,800 tons of Dex directories, which would stretch more than 3,100 miles, from Phoenix to Juneau, Alaska if laid end-to-end.
"Recycling your phone books saves trees, water, electricity and landfill space," said Greg Pollack, Dex Senior Market Manager. "Last year, Valley residents recycled more than 1.5 million used Dex directories and we’d love to collect even more books for recycling this year. We are extremely excited about the opportunities to partner with other local companies such as the ValleyWide Recycling Partnership, Radio Disney, GreenFiber and Friedman Recycling to make recycling options for outdated Dex phone books available and help a great charitable cause at the same time."
Recycled phone books are used to make insulation, animal bedding, packaging, shipping trays for fruit and a variety of other items – including more phone books. In the Greater Phoenix area, all recycled Dex books are used to make cellulose insulation locally with GreenFiber. Dex phone books contain up to 40 percent post-consumer recycled material.
